May 30 - Bilbao, Spain

BILBAO?!

Trying to mix a little culture in with the rock 'n' roll dirtbaggery, Mike & Jerry, along with their managers Susan & Bill, went to the Frank Geary designed Gugggenheim Museum in Bilbao and were raving about it the next day.

Me? I went to the mall.

I’m embarrassed to say, but I don’t recall ever having heard of Bilbao Spain before. But after last night, I can definitely say now that I’ll never forget it.

It all started off like any regular set; the crowd was loud and so was the band, but about two thirds of the way through, it seemed like a switch got thrown and the energy in the building turned up a notch. The guys finished their set and came out for a two song encore, and that was that. A sick Sean went directly from the stage out to the tour bus, and Jerry, Mike, & William went to the dressing room like they always do.

After a couple of minutes we noticed that the crowd was still screaming for more, which everyone thought was cool, but then another five minutes passed, the house lights & house music had come up, the crew had begun breaking down gear, and these fanaticos from Bilbao were still chanting, clapping, and screaming for more. Much like the Republicans during the presidential election of 2000, they weren’t going to go home until they got what they wanted. Somewhere around the 10 or 15 minute mark, Susan went out to the bus to try and roust Sean, and the rest of the guys were getting word out to the crew to get stuff set back up. After Sean reappeared the guys briefly discussed what to play and went back on the stage even as the techs were still hooking up drum mics.

The crowd went nuts, and the band rewarded their tenacity with "Dirt" & "Angry Chair," before Mike & William topped the night off by diving into a sea of upstretched arms and then exiting for good.

Jerry & Mike were saying that they’d never seen anything like that before, and that's coming from two guys who've seen their fair share of rabid crowds.

I don’t know what's in the water in Bilbao (we try to stick with the bottled stuff), but these people were straight up crazy.

Now it’s off to Germany to see if they can top that...
